Child Drownings in Maricopa County

Enough kids to fill a kindergarten class die from drowning each year in Maricopa County. Despite countless door-to-door campaigns to watch children around water, billboards and repeated warnings from victims' families, the annual number of childhood drownings in and around Maricopa County has been increasing over the past few years. In 2008, 17 children died; 20 in 2009. Last year, 21 children drowned from a water-related incident, most of them in backyard pools, the majority 3 or younger.
